I DON'T know what is more stupid – Heath Shaw's actions or the over-the-top penalty handed out by the AFL.
So let me get this straight. the AFL is telling us that this $10 bet on Nick Maxwell to be first goalkicker, of which he would have won a grand at best, through a friend is worse than racism?
Or abusing an umpire on TV or snorting cocaine? well, if you look at the facts on the table, it is.
A couple of weeks back Justin Sherman racially abused Gold Coast youngster Joel Wilkinson on two occasions. Penalty? Four weeks out of the AFL and a fine. Isn’t that a lot worse than an innocent $10 bet?
No, no. it gets worse.
Any player can save the $10 and put it with some more money, go down to a nightclub, pop a couple of illicit pills and not have to worry because he’s got three chances. that plus the fact that he could go for months, even maybe a year, without being tested. But, of course, they keeping telling us the system works.
The thing about the Collingwood betting "scandal" is that the reality of our game with 18 guys on the ground and another 18 guys trying to make you earn every possession is that it’s impossible to influence the outcome.
You can handball off to someone to kick the first goal but, in reality, it would happen once a century. And it would be too obvious.
I can remember a couple of specific times during my career when we had this situation. in 1998 we were not going so well at Brisbane. Our coach John Northey came in on the last meeting of the week and stated boldly that the club was putting a couple of grand down for us to win the game.
He said that the winnings would go towards the footy trip that year. we won and the footy trip was paid for.
Almost every week from about 1998 I had mates and close family ring and ask my opinion on the week’s game and also other teams.
I happily provided where I would start, who was in form and what kind of bets they should look at.
Fat lot of good it did. they never won a cracker.
The only guys who have enough influence in this game are the coaches and they have been influencing games for years. It’s called tanking.
Coaches overtrain teams to take the edge off them. they put odd positional mis-matches and even interchange players during the game to help results.
But don’t worry because the integrity of the game is in doubt over a $10 bet. give me a break.
Lastly, if I was Heath Shaw I would be on the phone to the AFLPA.
Sure, they may be a little busy with the next CBA deal but they should be protecting the players over such lunacy.
Eight weeks and $20,000 is worth fighting for justice.
